Description of CME Course
Obtaining informed consent is a fundamental ethical and legal responsibility, requiring physicians to clearly communicate diagnoses and treatment options including their risks, benefits, and alternatives in a manner sensitive to patient preferences and values. This educational activity examines the complexities of informed consent through a case study and discussion including evaluating when and how to provide information, differentiating between verbal and written consent, and navigating emergencies and surrogate decision-making. Participants will analyze ethical principles guiding informed consent and apply them to clinical scenarios. By understanding informed consent as a continuous dialogue rather than a one-time transaction, clinicians will strengthen patient-physician relationships, enhance shared decision-making, and uphold patient autonomy even in challenging situations involving urgent medical interventions or loss of decision-making capacity.
