Description of CME Course

Early diagnosis and appropriate management are crucial for improving the quality of life and prognosis for those with IEI. Advances in genetic research and therapies continue to improve outcomes for many patients with these disorders.

However, IEI can be challenging for providers. The scope of research related to IEI is prolific. A PubMed® search for the disorder over the last decade resulted in over 9,300 citations. It can be nearly impossible for providers to stay abreast of this magnitude of research, resulting in practice, knowledge and competency gaps.

Educational Objectives

Identify hallmark non-infectious comorbidities of humoral immunodeficiency, including pulmonary, gastrointestinal and allergic complications of antibody deficiency.

Critically appraise diagnostic and management complexities in IEI, including autoimmune disease manifestations, skin diseases and the use of biologics to treat immune dysregulation.

Summarize the most recent advances in diagnostic methods to identify and manage IEI.

Assess diagnostic and management strategies for NK cell deficiency, complement defects, and mannose-binding lectin.

Critically appraise advances in treatment strategies for IEI, including immunoglobulin replacement therapy, prophylactic antibiotics, genetic therapy, and transplantation.

Provide effective diagnostic and management strategies for recurrent infections and secondary immunodeficiency, including immunoglobulin replacement, hematopoietic stem cell transplant, gene therapy, and vaccination for immunocompromised patients.

Review the use of vaccines in patients that are immunosuppressed.
