Description of CME Course

This four-hour on-demand course focuses on the causes and enduring consequences of racism and health inequities in the treatment of people with substance use disorders (SUDs). Learners will explore health disparities in substance use and the causes therein, with a special emphasis on racially oppressive values that are harmful to racial and ethnic minoritized populations and learn skills to implement in their practice and organization to recognize and respond to inequities.

Educational Objectives

1. Examine the foundational concepts of racial inequity in access to healthcare and U.S. drug policy.
2. Explore how both explicit and implicit bias contribute to the propagation of health inequity in the treatment of people with substance use disorders.
3. Identify embedded racism that led to inequities within systems, including institutional structures, policies, and their effects on healthcare outcomes.
4. Identify anti-racism as an integral professional competency to help engage in conversations about race and racism and support skills to practice compassionate and equitable patient care.
5. Understand how to employ a racial equity framework to support long-lasting changes in clinical practice and healthcare systems.
