Description of CME Course

The maternal mortality rate has risen to unprecedented highs nationally and internationally and up to 80% are preventable. In the US, postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) accounts for 11% of maternal deaths and is the leading cause of death on the day of birth. PPH is one of the most common diagnoses resulting in medical malpractice allegations, accounting for 15% of maternal injury claims. Lack of readiness and recognition, as well as delayed management has led to unsuccessful reduction in PPH related deaths. The Surgeon General of the United States recently implemented a call-to-action to improve maternal health in the United States by reducing the maternal mortality rate by 50% over the next five years. A new Joint Commission (TJC) perinatal safety standard defines elements of performance that are recommended to reduce the likelihood of harm related to maternal hemorrhage. Urgency and action is necessary for hospitals and providers to prevent this adverse event. This is the final module in our PPH series. Evidence-based tools (ie, checklists, algorithms, samples, timeline records, etc.) are included to assist hospitals and providers in their efforts to reduce the likelihood of harm and malpractice allegations related to maternal hemorrhage.
