Description of CME Course

One of the most common acute surgical conditions in children is appendicitis. Less than 50% of children with appendicitis will present with classic symptoms. However, the perforation rate increases to more than 65% when the diagnosis of appendicitis is delayed for more than 48 hours. A delayed or missed diagnosis occurs in an estimated 19%-57% of young children with acute appendicitis; young children are much more likely to progress to perforation and peritonitis than older children and adults. A failure to diagnose appendicitis in a timely manner can delay necessary treatment increasing the risk of a perforation.
