Description of CME Course

The goal of this initiative is to enhance the effectiveness, reach, and measurable impact of Opioid Analgesic (OA) REMS-compliant education through a forward-thinking, outcomes-driven strategy that directly addresses persistent gaps and unmet needs in OA-related treatment, monitoring, prescribing, risk reduction, and patient counseling, as well as non-opioid pain management, while maintaining full adherence to all FDA REMS content and assessment requirements. Through innovative educational design, inclusive and flexible learning formats, and adaptive approaches responsive to individual clinician needs, this initiative is designed to achieve continual broad national outreach, foster sustained learner engagement, maximize learner-to-completer conversion, and translate education into meaningful improvements in clinical practice, thereby advancing achievement of the Opioid Analgesic REMS program goals.

The Pain Management in Primary Care: Translating Principles into Practice initiative leverages Pri-Med’s advanced outcomes analysis capabilities to inform the design and delivery of tailored, learner-centered educational strategies. These strategies emphasize strengthening foundational knowledge, delivering personalized and adaptive learning experiences, and providing opportunities for clinicians to practice key skills in a low-risk, realistic, case-based environment that supports the application and translation of learning into clinical practice. Building on the methodologies established under EG-001126 and further refined for this proposal, Pri-Med will deliver a longitudinal, adaptive learning experience through an interactive curriculum accessible via multiple REMS-compliant formats, both in-person and online. All REMS-compliant activities are fully aligned with the 2023 FDA Opioid Analgesic REMS Education Blueprint for Health Care Providers Involved in the Treatment and Monitoring of Patients with Pain, ensuring comprehensive coverage of required content and assessments. Importantly, Pri-Med will leverage its demonstrated operational REMS expertise and active, loyal network of >195,000 U.S.-based clinicians, along with the >50,000 NMA membership to assure continuous broad national outreach and to optimize learner completion of the full REMS-required education. Pri-Med will continue to provide detailed learner-level data to the FDA for all REMS completers, supporting transparency, compliance, and ongoing evaluation.

Educational Objectives

Upon completion of the Pain Management in Primary Care: Translating Principles into Practice initiative, learners will be able to:
1. Define key concepts of pain management, including mechanisms and classifications of pain to enhance clinical understanding.
2. Assess pain effectively while identifying risk factors for nonmedical use of opioids, substance/opioid use disorders.
3. Evaluate evidence-based nonpharmacologic and non-opioid approaches to pain management.
4. Review the role of opioids in pain management, including indications, limitations, and considerations for safe use.
5. Safely initiate, adjust, and discontinue opioid therapy in patients with acute or chronic pain.
6. Counsel patients and caregivers on the safe use, storage, and disposal of opioid analgesics, including overdose reversal agents.
7. Create personalized pain management plans integrating both opioid and non-opioid therapies.
8. Diagnose and manage opioid use disorder, using evidence-based approaches, and referrals to specialists when needed.
