Description of CME Course

The diagnosis of a substance use or opioid use disorder during pregnancy is linked to complications for the mother, fetus, and newborn. Chronically drug exposed fetuses are at high risk for neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) or neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NOWS). Anywhere from 45% to 94% of infants exposed in utero can show signs of withdrawal. From the first hour of life and up to 6 months postpartum, NAS/NOWS may evolve. This activity is part two of a two-part series that explores the evidence-based care of newborns who are at high risk for NAS/NOWS.

b. Adopt and apply professional guidelines and recommendations from ACOG, AWHONN, and AAP into the care of patients with NAS or NOWS (e.g. NAS/NOWS assessment and management, and long-term support), breastfeeding, roomin-in).
