CME Provider: American Society of Anesthesiologists

Description of CME Course

Peripheral intravenous (PIV) catheter insertion is the most common invasive hospital procedure performed worldwide, 50 percent of IVs will fail, with 23 percent of those failures due to infiltrations. The malpositioned IV presents a challenging and underreported problem for the anesthesiologist. Early signs of IV abnormalities such as fluid flow, swelling or redness at the site and pain on injection should trigger further inspection but these signs are not being identified until infiltration or extravasation has already occurred.

In this course, you’ll learn about the incidence and risks for IV infiltration and extravasation, which medications and patients are high risk, and how to diagnose and immediately treat the potential injury to avoid further harm to the patient. This course has been updated to include additional content regarding ultrasound-guided IVs.

Earn patient safety CME plus quality improvement points by creating an action plan to reduce infiltration and extravasation events in your practice and reporting outcomes on the measures taken.
