Description of CME Course
Hosted by AMAís Firearm Injury Prevention Task Force
Injuries and deaths from firearms are a public health crisis. In 2020, firearm injuries became the leading cause of death in children and adolescents in the United States. While this is a topic that physicians should openly discuss with patients, physicians may find counseling patients about firearm injury prevention difficult. Furthermore, options for intervening when patients are found to be at risk of self-harm or harm to others may vary based on state law. In this recorded session, we explore the epidemiology of firearm morbidity and mortality, discuss factors that increase the potential for firearm injury and death, and learn about evidence-based interventions. Hear directly from physicians that are a part of the AMA’s Firearm Injury Prevention task force who are working to normalize conversations about firearm safety and build comprehensive models of care that address the intersectional nature of trauma, social determinants of health, and violence.
