Description of CME Course
In an era that is increasingly conscious of race and diversity, analysts and therapists are seeking to identify their own biases in understanding other cultures. Freud (depth psychology) and Gandhi (psychosocial/mutual understanding) will be contrasted and explored in the context of current global and local rises in othering, multifocal fundamentalisms, “post-truth” politics and reactionary ascendancies. Erikson’s work on Gandhi in the 1960s will be re-evaluated critically as an example of Western interest in South Asia, highlighting his strengths in cross-cultural thought and his limitations as a Western thinker. A clinical case featuring themes of cross-cultural understanding and misunderstanding, including transference, will be presented. This session is designed to explore psychoanalytically informed efforts at cross-cultural understanding in the context of South Asia and the West.
