Description of CME Course

Exogenous oxytocin (Pitocin) may be the most commonly used drug in obstetrics but it is not benign. Its use in clinical practice is riddled with myths, unsubstantiated by science, that perpetuate poor practice habits. Misuse, overuse, and sometimes abuse in the administration of Pitocin is a primary concern in approximately 50% of all paid obstetric litigation claims. This monograph evaluates the serious implications of Pitocin misuse by busting oxytocin myths with current scientific facts. The truth about how to properly administer Pitocin safely and effectively is evaluated with support from evidence-based resources. National perinatal safety organization management recommendations of a “Low, slow, and Go without” mantra are discussed. A critical thinking drill that evaluates Pitocin myths and facts is included.
