Description of CME Course

While concerns about the opioid epidemic are paramount, many other controlled substances are being misused and abused. Medication reconciliation and the dangers of polypharmacy, especially among the elderly are emphasized. The second part of the presentation focuses specifically on the issues surrounding prescribing for pain, focusing on chronic pain. Risk assessment for addiction, discussion of alternative therapies, medication treatment agreements, tapering and discontinuation, and consistent use of risk and pain assessment tools are included. This course meets the requirements for 1 hour of education on Opioid and controlled substance prescribing for Arkansas prescribers’ license renewal.

Perform a complete patient assessment before prescribing controlled substances, including physical, mental and psychosocial status.
Explain the risks of prescribing controlled dangerous drugs to special populations such as adolescents, the elderly, women of childbearing age, and persons with mental health disorders.
Utilize multimodal treatment options instead of or in addition to pharmacological strategies, especially when treating for pain.
Discuss the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC's) guidelines for opioid prescribing for chronic pain.
Construct a medication treatment agreement for a patient to begin treatment for chronic pain that includes opioid analgesics.
Identify key elements to be documented in patient records when prescribing controlled dangerous substances.
