Description of CME Course
Urinary tract infections are one of the five most common types of healthcare-associated infections. In fact, they account for one-fourth of all hospital healthcare-associated infections. Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) have been associated with increased morbidity, mortality, hospital cost, and length of stay. This program provides an overview of strategies to prevent CAUTIs, including appropriate indications for indwelling urinary catheters, alternatives to indwelling catheters, insertion and maintenance bundles, and stewardship measures.

Educational Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
1. Identify appropriate clinical indications for indwelling urinary catheter use and distinguish situations in which alternative urinary management strategies should be considered.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of evidence-based practices for urinary catheter insertion and maintenance, including the use of aseptic technique and standardized catheter care bundles.
3. Apply strategies to reduce CAUTI risk by promoting timely catheter removal and implementing protocols that support ongoing assessment of catheter necessity.
4. Describe the role of urine culture stewardship and interdisciplinary collaboration in preventing catheter-associated urinary tract infections and improving patient outcomes.
