Description of CME Course

Asthma ECHO is an integrated, 24 session series aimed at delivering: 1) an eight session entry-level program that defines best practices and addresses the 4 components of national asthma guidelines, 2) an eight session applied quality improvement program for Individuals who are motivated to participate asthma quality improvement or Maintenance of Certification, Part 4 activities, and 3) an eight session applied community program to promote best practices for school nurse, community health workers, nurse care managers, social workers, clinic-based staff and others working across settings collaboratively to improve asthma outcomes. These sessions will cover the four components of the NHLBI Expert Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma with 2020 Updates on three cycles of 8 consecutive Tuesdays from noon until 1 pm across an annual calendar. Each week is moderated by a content expert who has unique experience in the particular guidelines component theme, including: Assessing and Monitoring Asthma, Education for a Partnership in Care, Contributing Factors – Environmental and Co-Morbid, and Medications. Each session begins with a de-identified case that supports problem-based learning. Various case types reflect the importance of asthma care across settings including primary care, specialty care, school, home and community. Each week a moderator leads a systematic discussion of the case with a summary, clarifying discussion questions from the group, suggestions for problem-solving and written recommendations. The second segment of each session includes a didactic presentation by the weekly moderator with slides. Each didactic emphasizes the need for collaboration across disciplines for a collective impact to reduce the burden of asthma with selected, highlighted best practices. All professionals caring for people with asthma are welcome – physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, registered nurses, school nurses, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, nurse care managers, health leaders from government and insurance and others. This 24 sessions series aims to equip health professionals to consistently engage across disciplines around asthma services improvement aimed at both healthcare professionals and family experiences that lead to positive health outcomes. This collaborative environment also allows cased based learning to highlight the contributions of different disciplines across an array of common asthma-care scenarios. Each case presented by ECHO participants is used to develop skills and expertise. This methodology allows for all individuals to learn from one another and gain a deeper understanding of challenges in asthma care in Missouri communities.
