Description of CME Course
Assisted vaginal delivery (AVD) has been performed since the 1500’s but lost popularity in the United Staes in the early to mid-1990’s due to concerns that cesarean delivery may be safer than assisted vaginal delivery. Despite having proven this untrue in most circumstances, the rate of cesarean has increased, and the rate of assisted vaginal delivery has decreased contributing to a rise primary cesareans and associated morbidity. A primary provider can reduce adverse events and the rate of unnecessary cesarean deliveries by assisting with the vaginal delivery process. Forceps, vacuum devices, and human hands can help guide a misaligned fetus or hasten prolonged labor to facilitate a safe birth. Vacuum assisted birth is utilized far more frequently than that of forceps thought to be attributed to ease of use and minimal exposure to forceps training. This activity will enhance knowledge and skills for the safe application of a vacuum device or forceps during a vaginal birth.
