Description

The purpose of this course is to provide all healthcare prescribers with comprehensive information to support safe and effective prescribing habits. The content addresses relevant Florida laws and rules, as well as clinical practice regulations and guidelines related to safe prescribing of controlled prescription drugs and managing pain patients with and without controlled prescription drugs. Ultimately, prescribers should not be afraid to prescribe necessary drugs, but they should understand the context in which they are prescribing, remain vigilant, and utilize available tools to protect themselves and their patients.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, learners should be able to:

1. Recognize the relevant clinical guidelines and prescribing laws/rules that govern prescribers of controlled substances, particularly in Florida
2. Implement appropriate screening and documentation requirements for prescribing controlled substances in patients experiencing pain
3. Apply concepts of SBIRT (screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment) and motivational interviewing within patient encounters
4. Utilize appropriate screening tools such as ORT®, SOAPP-R®, COMM™, UDS, E-FORCSE® and others to identify patients at risk for misuse or who are addicted to controlled substances
Implement appropriate monitoring and referrals for patients who are prescribed controlled substances
5. Recommend alternative pharmacologic options, non-pharmacologic methods and procedures, and complementary and alternative treatment options for managing pain
