Increasing administrative responsibilities due to regulatory pressures and evolving payment and care delivery models reduce the amount of time physicians spend delivering direct patient care. Implementing team huddles can be a powerful tool to enhance care coordination, improve patient and staff experience and maximize efficiency. Team huddles provide an opportunity to check in at the beginning of each clinic session to ensure that the whole team is on the same page and focused on the same goals throughout the day. Practice teams are faced with caring for complex patients and the need to communicate with other care team members on a regular basis. Being prepared for a busy clinic session is an essential part of any high-performing practice, particularly one that sees patients with complex health care needs. Implementing daily team huddles is an effective strategy to prepare physicians and practice staff for the day and maximize the quality and quantity of time that can be spent with patients. Huddles allow the practice to plan for changes in the daily workflow, predict and manage crises before they arise and make adjustments that improve patient access. Huddles enable teams to have frequent but short briefings so that they can stay informed, review work, make plans and move ahead rapidly. This module provides step-by-step guidance on how to implement effective team huddles.
