Whether due to stigma or lack of access to mental health providers, more primary care providers are providing mental health care treatments in their offices. According to a 2014 study published in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, “Between 1995-1998 and 2007-2010, a significant increase occurred in the rate per 100 population of primary care visits with mental health complaints (5.96 to 8.49) (OR = 0.45; 95% CI, 0.33-0.62, mental disorders (8.75 to 13.23) (OR = 1.40;95%CI, 1.26-1.56), and psychotropic medications (11.08 to 26.74) (OR = 3.43; 95% CI, 2.16-2.71).” There is a well-documented lack of access to specialty providers and case-based/specialty focused education on psychiatric medication management, especially in rural areas.
The ECHO methodology of case-based interactive learning has been shown to help primary care clinicians develop expertise in treating behavioral and mental health issues. (see documentation) In addition, behavioral health was the top area of interest for approximately 300 clinicians who completed the fall 2016 needs assessment of ECHO program options. (see documentation)
