Description of CME Course
Diagnostic error is the top cause of professional liability claims and a prominent patient safety issue, as highlighted by the 2015 IOM/NAM Report, Improving Diagnosis in Healthcare. A key recommendation of that report was to “Ensure that health information technologies (IT) support patients and healthcare professionals in the diagnostic process.” An important tool for clinical decision support is the differential diagnosis (DDx) generator. One study found that 81% of the cases of diagnostic error cases lacked any indication of a differential diagnosis. Several tools are available to assist the clinician in generating and prioritizing differential diagnoses. This monograph will provide an overview of their capabilities and suggested criteria for judging their worth.
