Educational Objectives
LO 1: Define coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19); and summarize the pathogenesis from its natural animal reservoir to infecting humans.
LO 2: Summarize the current epidemiology of the COVID-19 pandemic; and explain how the case fatalty rates differ based on country, timeframe, age-group, and presence of comorbidities.
LO 3: Recognize the clinical features and possible complications of COVID-19; and recall the risk factors for severe infection.
LO 4: Define polymerase chain reaction (PCR); and recall the indications for using PCR.
LO 5: Differentiate between PCR and reverse transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR) based on their indications, items needed, and steps.
LO 6: Based on the structure of coronaviruses, recommend the appropriate type of PCR for diagnosing coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19).
LO 7: Recall the gold-standard investigation for diagnosing coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19); and explain the cons of this investigation as it relates to its sensitivity.
LO 8: Differentiate between reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and chest computed tomography (CT) based on their sensitivity and specificity.
LO 9: Recall and recognize the possible features of COVID-19 seen on chest X-ray; and summarize the cons of using chest X-ray in COVID-19 diagnosis.
LO 10: Recall and recognize the possible features of COVID-19 seen on chest CT; and compare these findings to other causes of viral pneumonia and non-infectious conditions.
LO 11: Given an N95 mask, demonstrate, in order, the appropriate steps of applying and removing a N95 mask.
LO 12: Summarize what is meant by the phrase "flatten the curve" as it relates to the coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19) pandemic; and list the measures that can be undertaken to help flatten the curve.
LO 13: Summarize what is meant by the phrase "raise the line" as it relates to the COVID-19 pandemic; and list the measures that can be undertaken to help raise the line.
